Biography

It is difficult to shrug off Pupil if only for its stellar personnel, a fabled mish-mash of key players from mammoth ‘90s acts Eraserheads, Teeth, and Barbie’s Cradle, among others. But such associations should be quickly relegated to marginalia when faced with the key matter at hand: their music, an urgent, take-no-prisoners rethinking of modern rock for the post-NU107, Facebook-era set; a guitar-driven body of work that remains as ferocious as it is familiar in its masterful utility of melody. For what is a band but how its discography is received? And Pupil has proven triumphant on both commercial and critical fronts, with signature numbers from their three records (2005’s Beautiful Machines, 2007’s Wildlife, and 2011’s Limiters of the Infinity Pool) tickling listeners and pundits alike pink. The quartet has also been recognized overseas: “Blow Your House Down” appears in the Rykodisc Original Sountrack of animated feature Hoodwinked; the video for “Set Me Apart” won the World Gold for Music Videos at the prestigious Promax Awards in New York City; and, most recently, the video for “20/20” garnered Music Video of the Year honors at 2013’s International Film Festival Manhattan. The band has also been honored locally by practically all the award-giving bodies that matter, among them the NU107 Rock Awards, the MYX Music Awards, the MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards, and Awit Awards. Despite all of this, singer-guitarist-songwriter Ely Buendia insists, “Pupil’s music has one foot in the past, [another] in the present, and both eyes dead set at the future.” With such able musicians in its roster—bassist Dok Sergio, drummer Wendell Garcia, guitarist Jerome Velasco; along with past members Boga Jugo on drums and Yan Yuzon on guitar—Pupil is a well-oiled machine given to protracted spells of redefinition and experimentation. They are currently at work on their fourth full-length disc.
